interviewed one of the college students from Trisakti School of Management in Bekasi, her name is Alyani Khairina. I asked about her perception about Covid-19 pandemic. The first question that i asked was her daily activity during this pandemic situation. She said that the pandemic has changed her daily activities, she gets limited to go anywhere and meeting her close friends during this condition and just studying at her home almost every day. Then, she said that this pandemic is occur naturally, so she just used the health protocol if she want to go outside, or maybe if she was bored she would like to had some “me time” before she continue to study.

The next thing that I wanted to know is this pandemic situation disrupting her studies or not. And she responds that sadly yes, she gets hard for understanding what her lecturer is saying because there's a limit that she can’t do some practical, meanwhile, she had some practical in computer laboratory to learn about SAP system that important to accounting studies. Also she felt that home is not a great place to study because there's so much distraction like families or connection.

Furthermore, she doesn’t think that online learning prevented her to study or making an assignment since she just finishing her paper recently. She said that if she had to choose to study online or face-to-face learning she rather choose online because she thinks she enjoys online learning, but sometimes she wants to go offline too because she could meet her friends and study together. At the end of the interview she hopes in this situation the lecturers could understand us because there are many student that hasn't had a good connection while doing classes, so she hopes there’s a tolerance for them and just dont be really strict to them.

Pros and Cons Working at Startup Firms than Corporate. Which is Suitable for Freshgradute?

Nowadays, Millennials seem to have their dream job to work in a startup firm rather than corporate once they graduate from university. The rapid growth of startups seems to be more attractive to millennials. Furthermore, now, more than 80 ecosystems globally have produced a billion-dollar startup when the term was popularized in 2013, only 4 ecosystems produced unicorns or billion-dollar exits. Southeast Asian startups raised US $ 8.58 billion in the first few months of 2019, which is very close to what US startups have accumulated. And it will be increasing over time. Here’s the pros and cons working at startup over corporate:

1. Flexibility.
The flexibility is usually sought by fresh graduates because the flexibility of working hours will bring the opportunity to explore more about their job. 77 percent of millennials say that flexible work hours are a key to productivity in the workplace" - Forbes Meanwhile, in Corporate is usually more strict. The corporate has the rules to work within the stipulated time and some people will feel under pressure to do their job.

2. The Stability.
Corporates offer higher pay and stability to their employees. With start-ups there is a risk involved about whether the company will actually be able to achieve success. Whereas, startups mostly offer lower salary, so it’s instability that comes with start-ups which makes many turn to corporates. Research by UC Berkeley & Stanford and other contributors suggests that over 90% of startups fail within their first three years.

3. The Innovations
Startups fast growth, and this comes from employees innovating and trying new things. No good CEO of a startup will hold you back from trying something new. This is how companies deliver results with fresh designs and new concepts that their competition can’t. You can innovate and explore more to gain innovations instead of just work to pursue the target that the corporate have.

4. Fewer Benefits
Startups offer many opportunities to growth. If the business goes well, you get a part of the spoils too. And also, you get to work in many roles and gain valuable skills and experience to add to your resume. Fresh graduates who have no experience in working can learn new skills in startup firms rather than working in a corporate that usually needs to master a skill to work.

Despite, the startup seems to be more beneficial, working at the corporate is no less cool, because the corporate have fixed working hours, stability pay, while startups are more flexible. Both startups and the corporates have pros and cons, and it depends on your personal situations. If you already have mastered your skill, the corporate is a good choice. And as fresh graduates, you may need time to explore more about the working environment, innovations, and seeking a lot of benefits. Startup firms are the right place for you to learn a lot. Moreover, the experiences that you learn will path you to find your future career.
